• The monks of the Pacific Hermitage

I live a few miles down the road from the Pacific Hermitage. A few days ago I invited the monks to my home for their daily meal. It was beautiful to see the three venerable monks walking down my driveway in the snow with the neighborhood dogs “welcoming” them. When Venerable Thitabho saw my fiddle he suggested that I might like your music and later provided the link to your blog and music. Wow! What a treat! So wonderful! And what a wonderful and kind way to share your music… by passing on the kindness.I offered the monks the meal and shared it quiet awareness. Before leaving they chanted a…

  • immeasurable joy from 5 cents dana

I was in the queue at the cashier 2 days ago when I saw a 5 cent coin right on top of my dollar notes in my wallet. Just as i took it in my hand, i heard the cashier telling a customer in front of me that he had given her short of 5 cents. I couldn’t believe my ears of the coincidence and immediately handed the customer the 5 cent coin. He was most appreciative and thanked me profusely. The simple act touched my heart, too. I felt simply good that i did the right thing. As a healthcare provider, I have many opportunities to do good but…

  • Simple Act of Kindness

I was waiting for the lift with my wife to descend to the ground floor after a meal on the 2nd floor of a food centre. We were slightly late for an event, and therefore was in a slight rush. When the lift came, we immediately entered, and I pressed the button for the ground floor. The lift door started to close, but I noticed there was an elderly man, with some difficulty walking, trying to rush for the same lift. I was sure the man has had a stroke, judging from the way he walked, and the difficulty he had in coordinating his limbs. I immediately reached for the…

  • Sharing of umbrella

It was raining in the morning on one of the working day when I alight at the bus-stop. There were a few people at the bus stop who are waiting for rain to stop. As the rain is not heavy & I know people need to rush for work, I offer to share my umbrella with a lady. I reached my office first but offered to shelter her to her office building which is some distance away. The next morning when I was waiting for the bus at the bus interchange, I saw a lady smiling at me. I smiled back at her although I cannot remember who is she.…

  • Befriending a little girl

I volunteered to help out as assistant teacher in charge of 10 children on a day excursion. I noticed that there was a girl call her Kelly, who was very lively and full of good humor, curiosity and questions . She was not popular with the teachers as she was hyperactive and not very compliant to rules and discipline about falling in line when walking from place A to B. She was reprimanded on at least 3 occasions for not listening to instructions and for talking unnecessarily. I saw a broken spirit in a young body. Because she was always getting into trouble with the teachers , the other children…

  • I helped the elderly

It was during the peak hours then, when i got up the SBS bus with my sister and her friend. We were making our way home after school. The seats were all occupied and it took a while for us to find a seat and settle down. After a few stops, an elderly woman hobbled up the bus with great difficulty, holding a walking stick. I stood up and offered my seat to her. She thanked me and i was very happy. Seeing the smile on her face, i felt veery delighted. I hope i can help more people again.

  • Wholesome Goodness

I lent a listening ear and time to a friend who is terminally ill. Through the months,we share knowledge on holistic cures for terminal illnesses and found time to practice what we knew. My friend found solace in confiding his inner thoughts with me, a total stranger when we first knew each other till his last days on earth. I got to share with him the little of the Buddhadharma that I knew. Hopefully his last thoughts and aspirations when he made his exit from this world would be to steer towards the Path to Buddhahood. That would have been great!

  • Memorizing of metta sutta

The Dharma talks given by Ven. Heng Sure had brought me back to my practice. Due to my laziness and defilements, I’ve slacked in my practice for a period of time. After the talk on Saturday in Singapore, I’ve made an aspiration to memorize the Karaṇīyamettā Sutta. Although I’ve not finish memorizing but I’m 10% through.
